What is Biblical Counselling?

Biblical Counselling can be defined in different ways. A useful working definition of  Biblical Counselling is offered by Dr. Bob Kellemen,

Christ-centered, comprehensive, compassionate, and culturally-informed biblical counseling depends upon the Holy Spirit to relate God’s inspired truth about people, problems, and solutions to human suffering (through the Christian soul care arts of sustaining and healing) and sin (through the Christian spiritual direction arts of reconciling and guiding) to empower people to exalt and enjoy God and to love others (Matthew 22:35-40) by cultivating conformity to Christ and communion with Christ and the Body of Christ.

Although this definition does not flow easy in reading, every word chosen expresses the precise meaning and scope of Biblical Counselling

Who are Biblical Counsellors?

From the above definition we can see that, in essence, Biblical Counselling is the work of  Believers who love God, recognise and trust the finished work of Jesus for their salvation, seek to serve Him by obeying His commands in the Bible and thereby love others and do good to them in every way possible especially through the use of words.

This means that Biblical counselling is the work of all Christians. When we speak to others, whether they are our children , spouses, friends, colleagues, etc. we are, in effect, counselling.

At the same time there are those who have commit themselves to training in Biblical Counselling  and are able to deal with the most complex issues of life.

A review from a NZBCA member

The (NZBCA) training has been encouraging to my own faith as I have been learning to connect the truth of Scripture to the problems and challenges people face. As I started the training I became aware that I had become complacent in my walk with the Lord and that I needed to address this area in my life. Participating in the training has introduced me to other like-minded believers who are serious about God's Word and caring for others. Listening to their insights and experiences has been very helpful. As a result of the training I am more confident to talk with people and discuss their problems over a flat white on our lunch break or around the BBQ on a weekend.
